I ended up having to alt-tab out, pop open a web browser, and hunt down a Care And Maintenance Of Your Badass Cyborg Ninja manual on YouTube.
METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE COMBO LIST TRIAL
One of the first bosses is basically impossible if you haven't mastered blocking/parrying, which is actually super easy to learn Revengeance just explains it horribly and doesn't give you a safety-wheels-on trial run.

It is inexcusable how little a game with such rewarding mechanical complexity attempts to clue you into any of it. Painfully forced exposition abounds, precious few playable moments are book-ended by lengthy cut-scenes (some of which look like they'd be really fun to, you know, play), and - most damningly - the game teaches you damn-near nothing. Large, bloody chunks of the combo-based actioner are outrageously enjoyable, but the first 40 minutes or so are a slog. Despite being a pretty great game overall, I sometimes got the impression that Revengeance didn't really give a damn about me. Rather, Revengeance's problem is that it's so very loud and meandering and insistent on itself that it sometimes forgets to check and see if the player's still having a good time. Don't get me wrong: I'm of the mind that Metal Gear wouldn't be Metal Gear without its many fearless cannon balls into lunacy's deepest waters when I advocate for restraint here, that's not even what I'm trying to discuss. For all the game's bluster, he is a calmly sauntering embodiment of well-timed humor and restraint. If only Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance were more like its robo-chainsaw-wolf companion, who I've nicknamed Raidog (or Logic Dog, for longer/more descriptive).

But does the extra helping of over-the-top insanity gel with Metal Gear's, er, also insane (but in a different way) universe? And how does the long-awaited PC port hold up? Here's wot I think. It dispenses with stealth almost entirely, favoring combo and counter-heavy action over tippy-toeing and mullet-rocking. Then again, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance isn't your average Metal Gear game. Or at least aren't as daunting with their combo lists.Metal Geaaaaaarrrrrrrr?!?!?!?! On PC? This particular collision of worlds - masters of espionage infiltrating the home of spyware, cyborg ninjas running amok in cyberspace - isn't unheard of, but it's far from the norm. Also not spoiling exactly but the other side weapons you get later don't exactly have as much combo variety as the polearm from what I remember. It's very friendly with it's area damage, but I found it pretty weak compared to the regular unequiped Y moves.

Also you might want to lay off polearm for now. I never dipped into the weird ones like throat slash or ones that looked too hard to perform without practicing to know it's use and how much time it took to perform them. You know they've thought it through when they even have an achievement for getting all S ranks on the hardest difficulty which requires you being an expert and utilizing every combo for each encounter correctly or semi cheezing it by just taking no damage for an encounter for an easy point boost which is also crazy.īut yeah, overall after you get comfortable with it and glance at the combo list every now and again you'll get used to some combos at least. Or you have multiple stingers for you to get in close to the enemy quickly based off different situations. I'm pulling this off the top of my head but X pause X being a launcher and then you have another launcher which would be useful to get in more hits and launch off a combo. They usually all have a purpose and use for particular enemies or what have you. I only have the pole-arm right now but that combo list is daunting.īTW, I remember some reviewer saying that the special weapons don't work well with the HF Blade which isn't true in my eyes in what I've seen of the pole-arm at Platinum Games usually don't just throw in a bunch of dumb combos for no reason.

Couple this with the fact that the special weapons have their own separate list. How do you remember them? All of them? Some of them? Some of the special moves require enemies on screen to practice (like the HF Blade energy wave). It's been a while since I've played a melee character action game and the combo list in MGR is huge. The former has one button interspersed with pauses for MOST of its attacks and in the latter I abused the heck out of the Izuna Drop and instantaneous Ultimate Attacks. But I've been competent with melee character action games like DMC4 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. I never got into fighting games like Mortal Kombat or Soulcalibur because of the enormous list of combos and my failure to remember them all or execute special attacks properly.
